The Single Bowl Kitchen Sink: It May Be All You Need
If you’ve got a modestly-sized kitchen with a dishwasher, a single bowl kitchen sink may be all you need. You’ll save precious countertop space for other kitchen tasks, while the single bowl allows you to rinse your plates, bowls, and utensils before putting them in the washer.
Single bowl kitchen sinks come in sizes from small to large, and you should probably consider the largest size that your kitchen space can afford (in which case you may simply choose a double bowl sink instead). The minimum for most uses is 23 inches and they go up to 32 inches and even larger. An exception is a bar sink, which may be even smaller.
This larger size of single bowl sink is perfect for entertaining kitchens that require heavy use of large pots, pans, and fryers. A 36-inch stainless steel single bowl sink with the farmhouse “exposed apron” style is a gorgeous accent for a well-designed kitchen built to entertain – if you can afford the space. With an high arched faucet in place, filling pots, pans and buckets is a simple task, and you may find that your sink becomes the busiest piece of equipment in the home, especially on summer days.
Why Stainless Is Your Best Choice
Any size of sink is available in stainless steel, and for many reasons they are becoming favorites of certified kitchen designers and anyone else who uses them on a regular basis. Not only do they look terrific, they are built to last, and with a minimal amount of care, will last for 20 or 30 years or more. When choosing your stainless steel sink, select the lowest gauge you can afford; the lower the gauge, the stronger the sink. Many experts consider 22 gauge to be the bare minimum, and recommend type 304 steel as the most durable (because type 304 sinks contain a percentage of nickel).
A basic under mount stainless kitchen sink will work very will with most counter types, from laminate, to stone and concrete. Of course, for the scenario that opened this article, the modest sized kitchen with a dishwasher, a lighter gauge may be appropriate if the single bowl sink will not be used for handling heavy pots and pans. Whatever single bowl kitchen sink you choose, it should be enjoyable to sit down with a kitchen designer, architect, or a few friends and family members and plan the kitchen remodel of your dreams.
